EO4Alps Landslides initiative

Access the thematic App

The eo4alps-landslides app is accessible on request. Public authorities and private offices dealing with landslide hazards can request an invitation by contacting us. Applications will be validated on a case-by-case basis.

Once invitated, please register or log-in on the GEP home page. Then access the App here.

Service support can be found in the GEP tutorials or by asking us.

Context

Landslides are difficult to predict and still often to detect. They cause severe socio-economic constraints in mountainous regions and significant risks to people and infrastructures. eo4alps-landslides App aims to offer on-line services in order to exploit the full potential of satellite data coupled to advanced modeling for landslide hazards assessment in the Alpine region.

Advanced InSAR processing based-on the P-SBAS service over the Mont César, French Alps. more than 100 Sentinel 1A/B images (descending track) acquired during snow-free periods between April 2015 and October 2020 are analyzed to monitor ground displacements.

La Valette complex earth-slide monitoring results, based on processing nearly hundred of optical spaceborne images with MPIC-Opt-Slide , a service designed for monitoring landslide persistent motion using image correlation approaches.

eo4alps-landslides specifications

eo4alps-landslides App allows accessing to satellite data and to satellite ground motion and modeling services for documenting and assessing landslide hazard at several spatial scales (region, municipality and slope). The services are accessible on the Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP), ensuring access to input satellite data and computing facilities.

The App integrates three interlinked modules:

  1. Landslide-Motion: dedicated to the survey of unstable slopes in near-real time and in a systematic mode based on optical and SAR change detection, pixel offset tracking and advanced InSAR processing (such as ALADIM, MPIC-OPT-SLIDE, FASTVEL, P-SBAS or SNAPPING services);
  2. Landslide-Inventory: dedicated to the creation and update of detailed catalogues of landslide events, mostly based on integrated motion maps combining various terrain motion maps and change detection maps (DSM-OPT, MOTION-Combi services).
  3. Landslide-Hazard: dedicated to the forecast of spatial landslide hazard and landslide evolution scenarios (LandStat, VolToo, FLOW-R or MIBSA services).

The App is user-tailored and adapted to several scales:

  • User-driven: user-oriented services with the engagement of many authorities and stakeholders responsible for landslide Management.
  • Scales of analysis: tailored services for three analysis scales using specific data and models (Tier 1: regional authorities; Tier 2: municipalities; Tier 3: slope specific level).
  • Interoperability: accessible online, optimized for HPC and designed as generic as possible for application in other settings or with other information systems.

Additional information on the background and uses of the application is available on the project website and on the leaflet presenting the current accessible services.

eo4alps-landslides contributors

eo4alps-landslides is part of the regional initiative science funded by the European Space Agency, and is conducted by an international group of experts in landslide sciences and practices, optical and SAR image processing and IT. The consortium is led by CNRS/EOST (Dr. Jean-Philippe Malet) with the support of Terranum (Dr. Clément Michoud).
